Using the Expression Builder

You can launch the Expression Builder wherever you see this button

Main text field

The upper part of the window is the main text field where you create your expression. See image You can type into it directly, or click the buttons in the lower half of the window to automatically add text. You can change the font if you wish.

Help text

The yellow field immediately below the edit field is for help text. See image Click the tabs in the lower half of the window, or right click any of the buttons on the tabs to see relevant help text.

There is a scroll bar to the right of the help text area so you can scroll to see all the help text. You can also change the size of the help text area by clicking and dragging the grey bar above it.

Functions, operators and keyword buttons

The buttons in the lower half of the window represent all the functions, operators and keywords of Arezzo, grouped into different tabs according to functional area. See image

Click on a button to automatically add the relevant text to the edit field, at the current cursor position. The text that is added includes a left bracket if necessary, and includes recommended spaces. If you select Add Right Brackets from the Options menu you can choose to also have right brackets automatically inserted for you.

Remember you can right click any button to just see the help text for that button.

Note that some buttons appear in more than one group if they are relevant to more than one functional area.

Number buttons

The Number buttons and other frequently used buttons appear to the right of the tabs. See image This includes the me:value button, used in validation conditions to refer to the current value being validated.

Questions, Visit and eForms

You can select the codes of visits, eForms and questions from the drop down lists in the lower right of the window. See image

When you select a visit, the visit code is added to the expression in the main text field, and the Forms list shows only the eForms in that visit.

Similarly, when you select an eForm, the Questions list shows only the questions on that eForm.

When you select a question, if it is a category question, the Data Values list shows only the value codes for that question. This helps you to avoid using incorrect codes!

If you select Add Colons from the Options menu, you can choose to have a colon automatically added after every visit or eForm code.

Time units

The Time Units drop down lists all the valid time units available to use with date/time functions. Selecting a time unit from the list adds the relevant text to your expression.
