Answering text questions

When answering a question that requires a text entry, bear in mind the following points:

Adding line breaks

If the text box is big enough to allow you to enter multiple lines of text, you may want to add line breaks to separate your response. To do this:

Text format

If a format has been specified for this question, it will be displayed in a tooltip when you hover the mouse over the question field. This displays the maximum number and type of characters that can be entered.

You may also see an expand arrow to the right of a text box. When text has been entered which is longer than the text box, clicking this arrow displays a popup which allows you to view and edit all the text that has been entered. Characters exceeding the maximum number of characters allowed, set by the study designer for each question, will be ignored.

The format can include the following indicators:

A

An alphabetical character must be used in the position occupied by A.

For example, AAA restricts you to entering up to three letters – digits will not be accepted.

9

A numerical character must be used in the position occupied by 9.

For example, 999 restricts you to entering up to three digits – letters will not be accepted.

A9

A combination of alphabetical and numerical characters must be used in the positions occupied by A and 9.

For example, AA999 restricts you to entering two letters followed by three digits.

If no format is specified, you can type the data in a free format. This means that you may enter alphanumeric characters, in lower and upper cases, and use the forward and back arrows or amend the text in exactly the same manner as you would do in a word processor. Where necessary, the entry box scrolls to the right as you type in the data up to the maximum number of characters allowed for the text field.

Thesaurus questions

Thesaurus questions are clinically significant questions that can be coded against a medical dictionary. They are displayed on the eForm as a text box with an orange border and are answered in the same way as a normal text question. See example

Once answered, they can be coded.

To enter subject data, you need the 'Change Data' permission.
